Building Electric
River Jet Boats

RAISING $300K–$500K • PROTOTYPE TO PRODUCTION

Trails Edge Motorsports is a pre-revenue company developing electric river jet boats in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Our first prototype, the Surge 14, is in development. We have not sold or delivered any boats, and we have not taken any deposits.

The Opportunity

Gas jet boats dominate Western Canada’s rivers — loud, high-maintenance, and increasingly restricted. Trails Edge aims to define a new category: purpose-built electric river jet boats with instant torque, near-silent operation, and shallow-water capability no propeller boat can match. Boat One, the Surge 14, is targeted to demonstrate on the Wapiti River in 2027. That is a target, not a promise.

First Mover

No direct electric river jet boat competitor we’ve found. The brand is established and supplier selection is underway; the IP68 test program will be proven on the prototype.

Technical Founder

Red Seal Electrician, 25+ years in high-voltage systems. Founder salary is planned to be deferred through 2027.

Planned Ecosystem

Planned: manufacturing (The Lab) + boat line + dealership + experience centre (The Edge), under one brand. None of these is earning revenue yet.

Use of Funds

Category % of Funds Covers
Prototype Build 35–40% Hull fabrication, jet drive fitout, HV wiring, IP68 testing
Components 25–30% Electric motors, battery pack, jet drive, electronics
Compliance & Testing 8–10% Independent review against Transport Canada and ABYC requirements; IP68 enclosure testing
Marketing & Web 5–8% Wapiti River demo event, video, trade shows
Working Capital 10–15% Operations, contingency, legal, insurance

Milestone-Based Structure

Milestone Equity Vested Target
Prototype complete + Wapiti River demonstration 25% Q1 2027 (target)
Independent review against Transport Canada & ABYC requirements 25% Q1 2027 (target)
Government grants secured OR first production sale 25% Q2 2027 (target)
10 boats delivered to customers 25% Q4 2028 (target)

Proposed investor protections (subject to definitive agreements): staged capital deployment tied to milestones • investors would retain ownership of funded prototypes if the venture does not proceed • physical assets may provide some recovery value • non-dilutive programs we plan to apply for (NRC IRAP, SR&ED, Alberta Innovation Employment Grant); none applied for or awarded to date.

Government Funding

Non-Dilutive Funding We Are Pursuing

We believe Trails Edge may qualify for Canadian and Alberta innovation programs that cost-share R&D. We plan to apply as hull and powertrain development gets underway. Any government funding would add to investor capital, not replace it, and would stretch each investor dollar further.

NRC IRAP

The National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program provides technical and business advice and cost-shares R&D projects at incorporated Canadian SMEs. Its clean technology stream supports projects with measurable environmental benefits once a proof of concept is validated. We plan to start working with an Industrial Technology Advisor during prototype development.

SR&ED Tax Credits

The federal Scientific Research & Experimental Development program offers Canadian-controlled private corporations a refundable investment tax credit at the enhanced 35% rate on qualifying R&D spending. Eligible work could include powertrain, battery and jet-drive integration. Claims are filed with the annual corporate tax return.

Alberta Innovation Employment Grant

Alberta’s refundable grant pays 8% on Alberta R&D spending up to a company’s base level and 20% on spending above it. It is claimed alongside SR&ED, and we expect to claim it for R&D carried out in Grande Prairie.

Alberta Innovates

Alberta’s innovation agency funds technology development and demonstration projects, including advanced manufacturing and energy projects at Technology Readiness Levels 3–7, with cost-matching from the company. We plan to explore which of its current and redesigned programs fit our boat program.

No government funding has been applied for or awarded to date. All programs are subject to eligibility, application, assessment and approval, and to each program’s terms at the time of application.
